Sarah - I know exactly what you mean; I think this book is trying too hard to be "stark and strident", just like you say. The setting is already heart-wrenchingly dramatic - does it really need to be amped up by short, punchy sentences?

That aside, I'm finding it easy reading and quite gripping in some places.

P.S: thanks for this great site! You're on my Google Reader and I really like reading your reviews.

I Love Pride and Prejudice and have seen the really, really, really long version of the movie a lot. I saw this book and I was kind of scared to read it (I haven't) as you said.
Maybe I'll read it now.

I've also been put off Meg Cabot, though I used to read a lot of the Princess Diaries when I was younger. I think I'll give this one a try though - it sounds interesting. You made me laugh when you said there's no singing, ha ha ha.

Your eye-teeth are your canine teeth. Your canine teeth are called eye-teeth because they form near yourf eyes and move down through your face to move into your mouth.

Also I like long books and even if I have not read The Crow I have read the other 2 Pellinor books and they did not cut out all the un-nessisary parts and I liked reading them. So I am happy that she didn't cut the un-nessissary parts and left the book fat and without a diet.

I agree, Time of the Eagle wasn't as good as the first book, I don't know why. Maybe the story seemed a little repetitive or something, since Avala continued her father's work in a similar way.

I agree! The first time I read it I found it kind of slow until chapter 12, but when I reread it just before the sequel, Blade of Fire, was released, I liked the whole thing.
